Dartmouth's Great War Fallen
Researching the Dartmouth men who died in the First World War

Dartmouth's Great War Fallen

This website is dedicated to all those commemorated in the town of Dartmouth, in Devon, who died as a result of their service to their country, during or shortly after the Great War.

Our starting point is the research undertaken by members of the Dartmouth History Research Group for an exhibition in 2014 to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War. The aim of the research was to provide a comprehensive list (so far as possible) of those commemorated in Dartmouth, and to identify the people to whom the names belonged. Our continuing research brings together the names of all those on the Town War Memorial, the memorials in three Dartmouth churches (St Saviour's, St Petrox and the Flavel Church), those commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in cemeteries in Dartmouth, and those commemorated on private memorials and in news items and obituaries published in the Dartmouth Chronicle during and after the war, who were not recorded on public memorials in Dartmouth.

Our aim is to find out as much as we can about each individual - their place in the community, their service, and the circumstances of their deaths, and to publish each individual's story on the website. Other general background articles will also be published from time to time. We hope thereby gradually to build a picture of the impact of the Great War on the community of Dartmouth.

There are 204 names recorded on our database. More may be added as research continues. The database (including the published articles) may be searched (for example) to find all those who served in the same regiment, or ship; or who died in the same action; or by any search term reflecting your own research interest. For further information on how to search our database, see the page on The Fallen.

We are publishing our research on a website (rather than in a book) as it enables the material to be kept up to date more easily, and also enables us to draw on any new sources of information which may become available over the next few years. If you have any information about the men commemorated here which you would like to see incorporated, please contact us.
